So if you live in Los Angeles area and are a fan of the Starz show "Outlander" or the books by Diana Gabaldon - or like me both - there is a display of some of the shows costumes up at The Grove. The exhibit is there until May 31st.
I went this past weekend and while it's a good thing that they put the costumes behind glass to keep people like me from touching them so I can see all the stitching, et. it also makes photographing them really hard due to the glare. But hopefully you'll get the gist...
The first 2 cases are located at the bottom of the escalators from the parking garage:
They have a listing of what episode each costume is from and I thought I had captured them...but looking at the pics I realize that the reflection obscures the lettering on most. Oops. Despite the barrier you can really tell the quality of the fabrics and all the details that went into these.
Dougal MacKenzie:
Geillis Duncan:
I remember seeing this one in the episode and wondering how "itchy" it would be. I really wanted to touch this to find out, but upclose it's quite stunning.
Claire Beachamp (around Castle Leoch):
That skirt just looks like it weighs a ton.
James Fraser in MacKenzie Tartan:
Redcoat:
I love the lace at the cravat, the braiding, the fringe on the scarf. It's such subtle detailing but it really sets this apart from the plainer details of the "Highlander" outfits.
Another Geillis:
Just look at all that texture...and those red shoes...
A Highlander costume:
So ignoring my reflection....again, I love the simplicity and drabber coloring compared to the Redcoat uniform.
After studying these I headed to the other case which was near the fountain:
It was just past 10am (when The Grove opens) and already the masses were coming:
I got the above shot in a split second it was clear....phwew!
Love that they gave us Frank and Claire Randall's 1940's costumes for comparison:
And one of Black Jack Randall's:
A tale of two Tobias Menzies
But really we were all there for this!!!!!! CLAIRE'S WEDDING DRESS!
Just....@#(&%*Y_@$....the colors....the leaves...the thread....the material...I mean it was gorgeous on the show but beyond words up close. If I had more confidence in my abilities I'd make this in a heartbeat!
And Jamie's Fraser Tartan which is close to the MacKenzie with some differences, like the red stripe that runs through it:
To say I was a happy little Outfander is putting it mildly:
In all it was a smorgasbord of wonderful details, fabrics, stitching (what I could see of it - but would love to look at the underside), colors, accessories...Terry Dresbach and her team have done such an amazing job of bringing the clothes to life.

Comic Con 2015 - Gone but not forgotten...
I can't believe Comic Con 2015 is over :( My body is still recovering. This year I felt was a little light on cosplay but I found some good ones. Of course it was my usual Con - books, books, books - with a little extra fun thrown in, like the impromptu interview I got to do with the voice of Donatello from TMNT and one of the voices from 'Sanjay and Craig':
Rob Paulsen (Donatello) and Maulik Pancholy (Sanjay and Craig)
My friend and I went into the booth and did a couple of recordings with them which was fun :) There's an embarrassing video of that somewhere...
I also did some other interviews which I'll put some links up to once I ge
Penny Dreadful - Mr. Gray Will See You Now
Ok, I couldn’t resist the pun on that. Seriously, Dorian Gray was the original right? A devastatingly handsome man given to all manner of vices and dark pleasures. However, unlike the the current version, this Mr. Gray really does have some truly dark sides to him and his ‘hidden room’ carries something far more sinister than anything the other one could dream of.
Anyhooo….
I’ve recently become OBSESSED with the show “Penny Dreadful”. I resisted it until now because I was convinced that it was just a tired re-hashing of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and while there are quit
Griffin and Sabine: Books You Should Be Reading
I discovered this amazing tale a few years ago when I worked for a bookstore and was instantly captured by the use of art and letters to tell an amazing story of romance and intrigue. I still, to this day, cannot figure if there is magic involved outside of the way Nick Bantock weaved his story: Are Griffin and Sabine living in parallel universes? Does she really exist? Does he really exist? Who is this mysterious entity that is trying to keep them apart? So many questions….so many themes….so many reasons to reread over and over again.
The thing that really stood out to me is how many experiences the reader is drawn into.
A rose is a rose is a rose...
Really this journal is nothing more than for me to post some pictures of my favorite flower. It's a wonderful time of year when they are all in their first bloom and I just can't resist taking photos of them wherever I go. I tried to come up with some clever words about symbolism, history, etc. but in the end...it's just an excuse to post some rose pics ;P I even love the pics where there might be a few blooms running to brown but still holding on to that bit of color and life....
Enjoy!
